DEPARTMENT OF NATIONAL DEFENCE DEVELOPS E-COMMERCE PRESENCE Challenge: The system required the intricate integration and recognition of many existing systems (Canada Post Shipping Module, Pitney Bowes, Legacy Accounting Systems, etc.) It was critical that the system would allow users with little or no technical expertise to modify the product catalog as well as to process orders internally for military personnel and externally for the general public. Finally the system needed to be scalable to accommodate the future opportunity of linking multiple inventory locations and logistical supply chains across the globe. Solution: From the user's perspective, the new store was designed to look and run far superior to the previous e-commerce solution. Additionally, the new e-commerce system automatically communicates with Canada Post's production server in real-time. By exchanging information such as product weight, product dimensions and shipping addresses, the e-commerce system is able to generate and present multiple delivery options that are specific to each customer's order. The biggest change, however, was the way the data was managed behind the scenes. The new e-commerce system featured a configurable product catalog that includes customizable categories and product attributes (e.g. size and color), a shopping basket feature, and back-office order management - all secured by SSL encryption and user authentication protocols. Other features of the new e-commerce site include real-time status notifications, order histories and account management for customers, as well as invoicing and packing support tools for the order-fulfillment staff. Results: Inventory control, order confirmation, processing, supply chain management, logistics and back-office order management are straightforward and more efficient.
