WEB DEVELOPMENT THAT ADHERES TO ACCESSIBILITY GUIDELINES FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED. Challenge: Coinciding with this mandate was a need to create Web information that would be accessible to a diverse audience, including those who could have one of three types of colour blindness (Protanopia, Deutanopia or Tritanopia), who were partially blind or had reduced eyesight, or who were completely blind. Solution: YouCanDoThat.com put a strategic plan in place to ensure that the Web architecture, layout, graphics and content minimized the impact on accessibility. This was achieved by testing multiple checkpoints as specified in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines that were established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). In addition to confirming to the Accessibility Guidelines, YouCanDoThat.com also developed a Web content management system that allows the Citizen Equity Committee staff to conveniently update their available Web content without compromising any accessibility features. Results: This interface-friendly environment addresses the variances of different types of colour blindness and uses programming standards that would allow visually disabled software like "JAWS" to render text and images for individuals who were completely blind.
